Frequently Asked Questions

What is the age range?

Lions will welcome you whatever your age. I our club we are all over 40, which is why we would particularly welcome younger Lions.

Do I have to live in Knowle or Dorridge?

No. In fact we would welcome more Lions from the surrounding areas, in order that we may expand our presence.

Is it all meetings?

No, like most Clubs we meet formally once a month at 8pm on the third Monday of the month at the Greswolde Hotel, but after that its fun and socials all the way.

Is it a Charity?

Yes we are registered with the Charities Commission (Reg. No. 509993), and we keep our fund raising strictly separate from our membership & administration costs, which we pay for through subscriptions.

Is it expensive?

Our annual subscription is only £50 and we do not have a meal at our meetings, so the answer has got to be ‘no’

Do I have to be a professional person to join Lions?

No, the Lions welcome everyone whether you are working, between jobs or retired, providing you share in their objectives – to serve the local community.

I’ve heard the Lions is not just in the UK?

Lions started in Chicago in 1917 and came to the UK in the early 1950s. Lions is the world’s largest and most active service organisation, with 1.3 million men & women world-wide; 19,000 Lions in Britain and Ireland, 900 of them in 60 Clubs in the Midlands. So there is bound to be a Club near you.

How many people are there in a Lions Club?

Usually between 20 & 30, although Clubs do vary. We currently have 27, but with some Lions moving on every year it is essential to replace them.

What about my family?

Recently our Club welcomed it’s first female Lions. We hope others will join them, either as couples or on their own. You will be welcome whether you are single, married, or otherwise.

Is Lions just fund raising?

Certainly not. Most Clubs have a variety of community service activities e.g. supporting youth, the elderly, those with disabilities, and health. Have a look at our Community Services pages to see our programme.

I’d like to give something back to my local community, but I don’t know if I can afford the time?

The commitment is only what you choose to make it. We find, as with most things in life, the more you can put in, the more you will get out. But its up to you

How can I find out whether I would enjoy Lions?

Contact us or call our President Peter Smith on 08458 33 58 94 and we will tell you more about our club, answer any further questions you may have, and invite you to a social event or a Club meeting. There is no obligation.
