That’s the target for this year’s Great Spec Collect

With help from our 3 local opticians – Alan Tyler in Dorridge, Bannisters and Vision Express in Knowle and yourselves, we have just parcelled up 920 pairs and sent them to our sister Lions Club in Chichester, who will sort them and then send them around the world where they can do most good.

Paul Wheatley K & D Lions Community Services Committee Chair thanked everyone for the great team effort and the strong start towards our target of collecting 2020 pairs of specs in 2020.

The Knowle Society has recently taken the red telephone box in Knowle High Street into its care and paid to have it refurbished as an iconic feature in the middle of the Village.

So next time you are passing and wondering what use it is being put to, please stop to read our latest membership, Message in a Bottle & Great Spec Collect notices. Perhaps they will inspire you to come and help our endeavors

The perfect combination of our caring residents coupled with great support from our three local opticians (Alan Tyler, Bannisters & Vision Express) resulted in 750 pairs of specs being sent to our sister Lions Club in Chichester who after sorting them distribute them over the world to where they can do most good.

In the 6 months to Christmas 2017 the joint efforts of our community and our three supporting opticians:-

  • Alan Tyler in Dorridge
  • Bannisters Eye Care in Knowle
  • Vision Express in Knowle

have resulted in 865 pairs of used spectacles being collected, which will soon to packaged up and sent to our sister Lions Club in Chichester who will after sorting them distribute them to eye clinics in Papua New Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria and Nepal.

Thanks and well done, but it does not stop there and our opticians will be happy to receive your glasses through to the end of June.

Following the success of our used glasses collection initiative in Knowle & Dorridge collecting over 2,000 pairs over the last 2 Spring periods, with support from our local opticians, we have decided it should run on and all through 2018.

Our annual Great Spec-Collect produced 1042 pairs of old or unwanted pairs of spectacles. All have been boxed up and sent to our sister Lions Club in Chichester who will sort them and distribute them to eye clinics in Papua New Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria and Nepal.

Thanks to many people who donated them and to our three local opticians (Alan Tyler in Dorridge, Bannisters Eye Care in Knowle and Vision Express in Knowle) who did a great job in collecting them on our behalf.

With 346 pairs of specs collected on our behalf in April by our three supporting opticians, we already have 821 pairs donated by our community from the first 3 months (February, March & April) of this years Great Spec Collect 2.

Our target, by the end of May of 1,000 pairs of specs looks in sight.

If you have had your eyes tested and don’t need to visit our supporting opticians (Bannisters Eyecare & Vision Express in Knowle and Alan Tyler in Dorridge) why not bring your old pairs to the Arden Academy hall on the day of the Knowle Fun Run Sunday 21 May and if you are not taking part why not time it to see the KIDS runs at 11:00 and the main Fun Run at 12 noon.

Through the three supporting opticians (Alan Tyler in Dorridge, Vision Express and Bannisters Eyecare in Knowle) our community donated, in February and March, a total of 475 pairs of old specs. This a great start towards our target of a 1,000 by 31st May.

Please check your drawers and cupboards and drop your old glasses in to you optician now, thank you
